The Wine Staging 2.6 open-source software has landed for GNU/Linux gamers, based on the Wine 2.6 development release, bringing various improvements and bug fixes.

Including various of the new features implemented upstream in the Wine 2.6 development release, such as more Shader Model 5 instructions, better font transformations in DirectWrite, and additional support for 3D textures, Wine Staging 2.6 adds support for recent versions of OSMesa, along with various small improvements.

The developers also note the fact that, despite what you've probably read lately, the command stream multithreading (CSMT) patchset has not been fully merged at the moment of the release of Wine Staging 2.6, but the devs work around the clock to bring you all the latest goodies so you can enjoy the most recent Windows games and apps on your favorite GNU/Linux distribution.

"There has been a lot of progress during the last weeks, but unfortunately the performance related optimizations are still missing in the development branch. We expect them to be merged in one of the following releases. In the meantime, Wine Staging users can continue to use the CSMT performance improvements as usual," reads the announcement.

No Man's Sky (GOG), Witcher 3, Neverwinter Online work better

If you didn't have the time to check out the release announcement for Wine 2.6, we remind you that the Windows games that should work better on Linux are Witcher 3, No Man's Sky (GOG), The Witness, Neverwinter Online, Gal*Gun: Double Peace, World of Warships, World Of Tanks 0.9.15, Train Fever, Aliens vs. Predator (2010), The Solus Project, Rogue Operatives, Ri-li 2.0.1, and Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Of course, various Windows applications, among which we can mention TNR MoonLight 2.31.122, StudioTax 2011, DevExpress .NET Installer, and Regedit will also perform better on your Linux distro.
