Wine Staging 1.9.7 arrives today, April 3, 2016, one day after the release of the Wine 1.9.7 development version, bringing various improvements and bug fixes.

According to the release notes, the most important changes implemented in Wine Staging 1.9.7 are improvements for the Video For Windows (VfW) multimedia framework and shell32 components, but users will also be happy to discover that many issues have been resolved.

Among the shell32 improvements that landed in Wine Staging 1.9.7, we can mention support for pasting files and folders into a directory using the right-click context menu, better support for moving files using the cut and paste functions, and a patch for a bug that prevented files from being copied.

"When you are using a software which displays a file list, for example a file manager or CD burning software, then chances are high that this program makes use of shell32," the developer has explained. "In this release we fixed a bug that files couldn't be copied and added support for pasting files/folders into a selected folder."

Multimedia related improvements

On the other hand, the Direct Show predecessor Video For Windows (VfW) multimedia framework from Microsoft received a bunch of much-needed improvements, which should make for older Windows games to work a lot better with Wine Staging in Linux, but you should be able to find more details in the official announcement.

Also, the Media Foundation API has been updated to make EA's Origin no longer crash after installing a game. With today's improvements in Wine Staging 1.9.7, Windows apps and games like Total Commander, CDBurnerXP, FindDupe, GoodSync, mIRC, Lifeforce demo, .NET 3.5, and .NET 2, should work better.
