The Wine developers met this weekend in Poland for the WineConf2017 annual Wine Conference to talk about the next major release of the open-source compatibility layer for running Windows apps and games on UNIX-like systems.

Developer Marcus Meissner attended the even and recorded Wine leader Alexandre Julliard's keynote at WineConf2017, talking about Wine 3.0, the next major release of the application, and its new features, which include Direct3D 11 support and an Android driver to allow users to use Wine on Google's Android mobile OS too.

According to Alexandre Julliard, Wine 3.0 is also switching to Windows 7 as default Windows version for new Wine installations after more than eight years, and will implement Direct3D command stream and message-mode pipes. However, it looks like about 160 reported regressions need to be fixed before the launch of Wine 3.0.

Direct3D 12, Vulkan and Wayland support coming next year

Wine 3.0 is expected to arrive by the end of the year with all the goodies mentioned above, but it won't support the next-generation Vulkan graphics API, nor the Wayland display server, major features that'll be added to an upcoming Wine release sometime next year, along with Direct3D 12 support, Android packaging, and OpenGL Core context. Check out the full video below for more details.

During the event, the devs also talked about the future of macOS support on upcoming Wine releases. The current stable release of Wine is version 2.0.3, and the latest development release is Wine 2.19 or Wine-Stating 2.19, which you can download them all right now from our website if you want to run Windows apps and games on your favorite GNU/Linux distribution.

Wine is used by many ex-Windows users who wanted to adopt an open-source and secure Linux-based operating system to play their favorite Windows games that haven't yet been ported to the Linux platform, as well as run any essential Windows apps that aren't available for GNU/Linux distribution or don't have an Open Source alternative. More details about Wine are available on the official website.
