14 DAY TRIAL // Developers hardly find a reason to stick with Windows phones these days, mostly as a result of the lack of commitment shown by Microsoft to its platform, so one by one top apps wave goodbye to Windows 10 Mobile.
Today it’s the turn of the New York Times to do the same thing, with the official app of the newspaper pulled from the Store and users instead redirected to the mobile version of the website.
In a statement on its official website (via MSPU), the NYT explains that Windows phone users switching to the browser version won’t feel any difference because the same feature pack as in the official app is being offered there as well.
Some features missing
“Beginning in December 2017, The New York Times will no longer support the NYTimes app for Windows Phone. You can access a more complete New York Times experience through our mobile site (mobile.nytimes.com) from your phone’s browser,” the announcement reads.
“The mobile website includes all of the same content and sections as the Windows App, plus it has a more interactive and modern home page that is similar to our other digital experiences. All New York Times home delivery and digital subscribers have unlimited access to both our mobile and desktop sites. Nonsubscribers will continue to receive to a number of free articles per month.”
Unfortunately, however, not all features that were available in the app are also being offered in the browser version, with functionality like the live tile and notifications obviously missing.
On the other hand, the New York Times saying goodbye to Windows phones is living proof there’s basically no reason to stay on Microsoft’s mobile platform these days, as nobody can find the motivation to code for Windows 10 Mobile since everyone’s leaving.
Microsoft itself said no new features are planned for Windows 10 Mobile and no hardware is on the company’s mobile roadmap.
