Microsoft ships Camera app update for Windows insiders

Microsoft has just shipped a new Camera app update for Windows insiders running preview builds of Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 2 on their smartphones.

Now at version 1016.11, the new Camera app comes with an updated UI, but also with a new timelapse feature that’s currently being tested and which could soon be released to all Windows 10 Mobile users.

Specifically, the most striking change after installing the new Camera app version is the updated UI, as the application now features refined icons plus a square image thumbnail in the lower right corner that lets you quickly open the last photo you’ve taken. A timer is now placed in the main camera UI, so it’s all a very straightforward process, as setting timers no longer requires going through other menus.

There’s also the new so-called “Time lapse” feature which, according to Microsoft, enables the phone to “keep taking photos until I press the camera button again when the timer is on.”

Substantial improvements still needed

While these are clearly very good improvements for Windows 10 Mobile devices, it’s no secret that Microsoft still has plenty of work to do here, especially when it comes to improving features that are already available on rival platforms.

Panoramas, for instance, are lacking more advanced functionality and users aren’t allowed to adjust basic settings such as zoom, making the final result look pretty simple, and not in a good way.

On the other hand, Windows 10 Mobile is clearly a work in progress and this update is living proof that the company is still keen on improving the platform despite all the criticism happening lately. The only problem is that the pace of releasing these updates is still not the best and users participating in the Windows Insider program are still waiting for more substantial changes.

Windows 10 Redstone 2 is projected to launch in March 2017 with improvements for both PCs and mobile devices, so hopefully more new features would show up by then.
