Microsoft ships new cumulative update for mobile platform

Just when you thought Windows 10 Mobile is dead, here’s Microsoft rolling out a new cumulative update for the platform as part of its February patching cycle.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4074592, which is also released on PCs running the Creators Update (version 1703) – phones have never received the Fall Creators Update, comes with little changes for mobile devices, though it does something that many users might notice.

Microsoft doesn’t provide a separate change log for mobile and PC, so the release notes that you can find at the end of the article include all the improvements and security fixes that Microsoft included in KB4074592 for both platforms.

Microsoft Edge no longer able to open PDF documents

But what Windows phones are getting exclusively is broken down support for PDF documents in Microsoft Edge. As you probably know already, Microsoft Edge, albeit a browser, has become the preferred PDF viewer for phones and PCs out there, thanks to the improvements that Microsoft rolled out lately.

Yet, after installing Windows 10 cumulative update KB4074592 on phones, it can no longer open PDF documents, and Microsoft says the only way to deal with this problem is to download the Reader app.

“Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release,” the company says.

This cumulative update also pushes the OS build number to 15063.909, and naturally, includes security fixes that were otherwise released to all Windows 10 devices on Patch Tuesday.

As everybody knows already, Microsoft barely cares about phones these days, and the simple fact that its latest cumulative update breaks down an OS feature is unlikely to change anything. Don’t expect an emergency hotfix to be shipped anytime soon, and the PDF support issue is more likely to be addressed as part of the March Patch Tuesday cycle when another cumulative update is projected to go live.
