Kantar data reveals a huge decline for WP in all markets

We’ve known for a while that Windows Phone is declining and losing precious market share points, but every time new data comes out, it just feels like someone likes to rub salt into the wound of those who still love the platform.

And the latest report from Kantar (covering the three-month period ending July 2016 versus the same period in 2015) does just that, as it shows that Windows Phone’s collapse continues, and this time, it does it in a more substantial way than before.

It all starts with Europe, which has long been Windows Phone’s top market. In Germany, for instance, Windows Phone lost 5.3 percent market share and is now at 4.8 percent, while in the United Kingdom, its share dropped by 7.6 percent to 4.3 percent. A similar decline was experienced in France too, where it lost 7.7 percent, but the worst performance happened in Italy, where the drop reached 9.6 percent.

Windows Phone has also dropped below the 1 percent market share in Spain too, as it lost 3.4 percent from 4 percent the year before.

Slow performance in the US too

Overall, in the EU region Windows Phone collapsed 6.7 percent and is now at 4.2 percent, even though this was one of the most successful markets for the platform.

And if you were thinking that the focus has been moved to the United States, that’s not at all true. Stats for this market show that Windows Phone dropped from 3.8 percent in 2015 to 2.4 percent market share this year, and the decline is likely to continue in the coming months too.

China isn’t quite the biggest supporter of Windows Phone either, so its market share dropped 1.3 percent to eventually settle at 0.2 percent.

The only growth experienced by Windows Phone took place in Japan, where it improved by 0.5 points to reach 0.6 percent in a market dominated by Android with a share of 64.6 percent.
