Microsoft is ending the Windows 10 free upgrade offer aimed at Windows 7 and 8.1 users on July 29, so those who are eligible for this promo should really hurry up if they don’t want to pay for the new operating system.

But as far as Windows Phone devices are concerned, Windows 10 Mobile is also offered as a free upgrade, but as compared to the PC, there’s no deadline for performing the switch.

Dona Sarkar, the chief of the Windows Insider program, reiterated on Twitter this morning that Windows Phone users can upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile completely free of charge both before and after the July 29 deadline, as the new bits will be there all the time for eligible devices.

“Clarification from this morning: the free upgrades for PC end on July 29 but as always there are no implications or cost on phone whatsoever,” she stated.

Not all devices getting Windows 10 Mobile

What’s important to know is that not all Windows Phone devices are getting the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, as their hardware specifications do not meet the requirements of the new operating system.

“As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience,” Microsoft said in mid-March, when it announced the new Windows 10 Mobile.

Approximately, 50 percent of the Windows Phone device lineup is left behind because of this decision, but the best way to experience Windows 10 Mobile is probably to purchase a new Lumia, such as the 950 and 950 XL. These come with support for all new features integrated into the operating system, such as Continuum and Windows Hello.
