Upgrade Advisor not available or no longer providing update

There’s a lot of speculation going on online regarding the future of Windows phones, and Microsoft does nothing more than fuel all the rumors pointing to the demise of the platform.

The most recent hint pointing in this direction is represented by some changes happening with the Upgrade Advisor app, which was released in 2015 when Microsoft shipped Windows 10 Mobile for Windows Phone 8.1 devices to ease the transition and make it smoother.

The Upgrade Advisor app disappeared from the Windows Store before the weekend, making everyone believe that Microsoft actually killed the main path for going from Windows Phone to Windows 10 Mobile. The app, however, returned to the Windows Store today, and can now be installed by anyone with a Windows Phone 8.1 device.

And even though the app is back in the Windows Store, it looks like users still can’t upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, with many complaints revealing that the new operating system is no longer being offered through the app.

App is back, upgrades are not

Some users are getting an error message telling that Microsoft is aware of the problem, which is apparently related to device compatibility with Windows 10 Mobile.

“The Windows 10 upgrade isn’t available for your phone right now. We’re trying to determine if your phone can support Windows 10,” the error message reads.

It’s believed that the Upgrade Advisor app is hitting some errors because Microsoft is updating it for the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update, which would only become available for a handful of devices. There’s no point in pulling the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile anyway, and Microsoft hasn’t made any announcement in this regard, so just take it as a bug for the time being at least until we hear something from the company.

The Windows 10 Creators Update is launching for mobile devices next week on April 25, and more info on how the upgrade can be performed will be provided very soon.
