14 DAY TRIAL // eBay announced a couple of weeks ago that its application would be pulled from Windows Phone, as the company is focusing efforts on Android and iOS versions, and today the official client stopped working completely on devices powered by Microsoft’s mobile operating system.
Although it was no longer available for download from the store, eBay was still working okay on Windows phones, but this all ends today, as the application is rendered useless and requires users to fire up their browsers and access the official eBay website should they want to shop online.
eBay is one of the big names that decided to leave Windows Phone in the latest few months, and the reason seems to be pretty much the same in all cases.
The collapsing market share of Windows Phone, which is currently at approximately 0.5 percent depending on the research firm providing the stats, is reason enough for the majority of developers to look elsewhere, and Android and iOS are obviously the preferred choices given their large userbases.
As a result, with developers leaving the platform, more and more users are also jumping ship to Android and iOS, even though there are loyal fans who promise to stick with Windows phones until the very end.
Surface Phone coming next ear
Microsoft, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be too keen on keeping its mobile platform alive and now rumor has it that the company is planning to discontinue the Lumia brand and focus exclusively on the Surface Phone that could launch next year.
In the meantime, Microsoft claims that it’s committed to supporting Windows 10 Mobile and partners who want to build devices running it, but for the moment, not too many companies seem to be interested in joining the Windows phone bandwagon.
For instance, Lenovo has recently denied plans to build Windows phones because of the declining market share, explaining that not even Microsoft seems to be interested in keeping its mobile platform alive.
