14 DAY TRIAL // There aren’t too many OEMs out there supporting Windows 10 Mobile right now, and this is actually one of the biggest problems of the platform, but hopefully, another company would launch a device running the operating system in the coming months.
A report coming from WindowsUnited reveals that German phone manufacturer Trekstor is pondering a return to Windows phones sometime soon, possibly with a model that supports Continuum.
Little is known at this point about this new phone, but the existing speculation seems to point to a mid-range device that could be powered by the already-outdated Snapdragon 617 processor. The target for Trekstor seems to be offering an affordable Windows 10 Mobile device that works with Continuum, though it’s not yet clear how affordable the company wants this model to be.
Microsoft phone also possibly coming
Given the lack of specifics, it’s better to take this report with a grain of salt, but Trekstor launching a new Windows phone wouldn’t be very surprising, especially because adoption of Microsoft’s operating system has always been bigger in Europe than in other markets across the world.
And yet, Trekstor is very likely to make the phone available in just a handful of markets and not sell it worldwide, with Germany obviously the first one to get it.
As far as other Windows phones are concerned, the eagerly-awaited Surface Phone is very unlikely to see daylight this year, but there’s a rumor swirling around out there that Microsoft could in the end launch a new device in 2017 anyway.
People with knowledge of the matter said that Microsoft could releases a “regular” Windows 10 Mobile device this year, possibly to keep the platform alive until the Surface Phone eventually gets the go-ahead.
This new phone would be based on the same approach as the current models and would be limited to Windows Store apps, support Continuum, Windows Hello, and all the other signature features of the platform. The debut could take place in the fall if it really gets the green light.
