Windows Phone Internals is a recently released tool that allows Windows Phone owners to tinker with their Windows Lumia handsets and unlock their bootloader. Once the bootloader is unlocked, owners can gain root access, or even create custom ROMs.

With the built-in limitations removed, authors can also load custom software on their phone with higher privileges, and allow apps to escape their sandboxed environments.

Owners can also make backup images of their phones, and even access the handset's filesystem in Mass Storage mode.

Windows Phone Internal currently works with devices running Windows 10 Mobile and Windows Phone 8.1. Supported phones include:

●      Lumia 520 ●      Lumia 521 ●      Lumia 525 ●      Lumia 620 ●      Lumia 625 ●      Lumia 720 ●      Lumia 820 ●      Lumia 920 ●      Lumia 1020 ●      Lumia 1320

This tool's author is Heathcliff, a known phone hacker that provided many rooting toolkits for Windows Phone 7 devices.

Windows Phone Internals' creator warns non-technical users not to use the tool if they don't know what they're doing since it may result in irreversible damage to the device. Additionally, Softpedia has not tested this tool, so we cannot vouch for its ease of use or cleanliness.

You can download Windows Phone Internals from Heathcliff's website, but make sure to get it scanned with your antivirus or via VirusTotal before running it, like any new software you want to install on your PC.
