14 DAY TRIAL // Windows Phone fans are already used to hearing bad news about their favorite mobile platform, given that the majority of recent market share stats have pointed to more or less significant declines, but if we are to trust Net Applications, it’s not all as bad as it seems.
Net Applications is one of the leading market share data providers and is often cited by Microsoft itself when it comes to statistics regarding desktop platforms.
According to the latest set of data for mobile operating systems, however, Net Applications puts Windows Phone at 2.79 percent, which keeps it in the third spot, but not as close to death as some others have said, though.
Android is obviously number one with 66.01 percent, followed by iOS with 27.84 percent. BlackBerry, which many refer to as Windows Phone’s only rival for the third place, is a little bit more behind with 0.85 percent.
Bumpy road for Windows Phone
Of course, nobody can guarantee that these figures are accurate, but it’s worth noting that just like the other market share data providers, Net Applications also indicates a decline for Windows Phone.
Microsoft’s mobile operating system dropped from 3.26 percent in June to 2.79 percent in June, but the last few months figures show a performance that’s full of ups and downs for Windows Phone. For example, Net Applications claims that Windows Phone increased from 2.54 percent in March to 4.03 percent the next month, before eventually dropping once again to 2.57 in May. It then grew back to 3.26 percent in June, and then declined to 2.79 percent in July.
As far as the future of Windows phones is concerned, the platform will receive the eagerly anticipated Anniversary Update tomorrow together with the desktop sibling before eventually getting “more cool things” in 2017, as Microsoft itself has promised.
While nobody knows for sure what these cool things actually are, there’s hope that they could include the Surface Phone, a new flagship device running Windows 10 Mobile and coming with the best in terms of hardware.
