Windows Defender, Kaspersky Internet Security, F-Secure Safe, and Trend Micro Internet Security are the four security solutions that got the maximum score in the most recent AV-Comparatives antivirus tests.

All four blocked 100 percent of the malware, though F-Secure also recorded the biggest number of false positives, with 14 samples incorrectly flagged as infected. Windows Defender got only 3 false positives, while Kaspersky offered flawless performance with zero false positives and top-rated protection.

BullGuard Internet Security and Quick Heal Total Security got the lowest scores. In the case of BullGuard, 2.5 percent of the malware managed to pass through the antivirus protection, while Quick Heal missed 1.6 percent of the malware, while 3.4 percent of the infections were flagged as user dependent.

Windows Defender in Windows 10

Of particular note, however, is the top performance of Windows Defender. Bundled into Windows 10, Windows Defender has evolved substantially with the most recent releases of Windows 10, and it now offers security features that are typically available in third-party security products, like real-time protection and daily definition updates.

Furthermore, the antivirus product has been overhauled to become Windows Defender Security Center in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, so it now groups all security features that are available on the operating system. This means the same app provides quick access to other security tools like firewall settings and parental controls, thus making everything a lot easier in Windows 10.

The latest AV-Comparatives security tests were performed on a system running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update with up-to-date software like Adobe Flash, Java, and Acrobat Reader.

“The results are based on the test set of 203 live test cases (malicious URLs found in the field), consisting of working exploits (drive-by downloads) and URLs pointing directly to malware. Thus exactly the same infection vectors are used as a typical user would experience in everyday life,” the antivirus testing organization explained.
