The Windows 10 growth continues at a good pace

Even though the free upgrade campaign came to an end on July 29, Windows 10 continues to increase its share around the world, and it’s still doing it at a pretty good pace, which gets it even closer to leader Windows 7.

The latest data provided by StatCounter for the month of August shows that, in some markets, Windows 10 has improved so much that it’s now very close to overtaking Windows 7 and becoming the top desktop operating system locally.

Case in point, Europe and North America, two of the markets where Windows 10 experienced above-average adoption figures and where a good pace is maintained even without the free upgrades.

Windows 7 and Windows 10 far ahead of rivals

In North America, Windows 7 is currently the leading choice for desktop OS users with a share of 32.12 percent, but the drop recorded in the last few months is huge - note that Windows 7 was less than a year ago installed on more than 50 percent of the PCs in the region.

Windows 10 is very close with 28.19 percent, and if the same trends are maintained - Windows 7 down, Windows 10 up - a switch of places could take place as soon as next month.

In Europe, the gap between Windows 7 and Windows 10 is a bit bigger, but the adoption of the new operating system is improving fast here as well. Windows 7 continues to be number one with 35.35 percent while Windows 10 is the runner-up with 30.39 percent.

All the other operating systems, including here Mac OS X, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, are far behind in both regions, so they no longer count for the two top spots in the desktop OS market.

And judging from how the two operating systems are performing these days, Windows 10 is bound to become the number one choice for desktop users around the world very soon, if not next month, certainly by the end of the year.
