Security-only updates also released for these OSes

The April 2018 Patch Tuesday cycle brought not only new Windows 10 cumulative updates, but also fresh monthly rollups for Windows 7 and 8.1.

As it happens every month, these rollups come with security-only updates as well, and they allow users and IT admins to quickly deploy only security patches included in the release and thus securing systems against exploits aimed at known vulnerabilities.

First and foremost, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 are both getting KB4093118 and security-only update KB4093108.

They include several important changes, like BSOD fixes and security updates for Internet Explorer, the Microsoft scripting engine, the Microsoft graphics component, and the Windows kernel. You can check out the full changelog in the box after the jump.

Windows 8.1 updates

Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are being updated with KB4093114 for all changes and KB4093115 for security-only fixes.

Again, the change log includes security improvements for Windows components and apps, as well as bug fixes for various problems, like those impacting printing content generated by ActiveX in Internet Explorer. The changelog is also included in full in the box at the end of the article.

In the case of the Windows 7, Microsoft says it is aware of two different issues, both of which are currently investigated and expected to be fixed in a future update. After installing the updates, SMB servers may leak memory on Windows 7, and a BSOD could be experienced on computers that don’t support Streaming Single Instructions Multiple Data (SIMD) Extensions 2 (SSE2).

Windows 8.1 updates come without any known issues, which means that most users should install them correctly with no bugs experienced afterward.

As with every monthly rollup, reboots are required to complete the install, and IT admins need to save work on the targeted systems before beginning deployment.
