Windows 10 might not be growing so fast when it comes to its global market share, but in terms of gaming adoption, Microsoft's new operating system is doing really well.

Statistics provided by Valve for its Steam gaming platform show that Windows 10 is gaining users impressively fast and is now the second most used operating system for playing games through this platform.

What's more, if the same growing trend is maintained in the coming months, it has all the chances in the world to take the leading spot and replace Windows 7 after a domination that has lasted for nearly 5 years.

Windows 7 still the leader, but not for long

At this point, the 64-bit version of Windows 7 keeps the leading spot with a share of 37.48 percent down 2.23 percent from the month before. Windows 10 is already the runner-up with 23.99 percent for the 64-bit edition, an increase of 7.60 percent since August.

Windows 8.1 is third with 18.62 percent, but its Steam share is already collapsing, so it lost no less than 4.74 percent in the last 30 days.

The 32-bit version of Windows 10, whose adoption is clearly lagging behind the one of 64-bit, is currently at 0.88 percent, up 0.25 percent from the month before.

Overall, Windows is the preferred operating system for 95.71 percent of the Steam gamers, down 0.05 percent, while Mac OS X is being used on 3.23 percent of the machines. Linux has also improved slightly by 0.02 percent to reach 0.94 percent.

Windows 10's performance is very likely to improve even more in the coming months, as more users are migrated to the new OS. Microsoft is rolling out Windows 10 in stages, as potential compatibility issues are being fixed, so more Steam gamers are very likely to adopt it as their daily driver for playing games.
