Microsoft wants Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by 2017

Windows 10 was officially launched last week, and Microsoft is now encouraging everyone eligible for the free upgrade to deploy the new OS, so it’s no surprise that its adoption is growing at a very fast pace.

Statistics provided by Net Applications for the month of July 2015 show that Windows 10’s market share nearly tripled in less than 3 days after its launch, reaching a record 0.39 percent since its debut as part of the Windows Insider program.

Windows 10 is now powering only a small percentage of PCs across the world, but the rapid increase in market share shows that adoption is on the rise and better figures are expected to be reached this month.

Right now, Windows 7 is the number one operating system on the desktop with 60.75 percent, followed by Windows 8.1 with 13.09 percent. Windows XP is third with 11.74 percent.

Impressive result for just 3 days on the market

At first glance, owning 0.39 percent of the desktop market might not seem much, but if we look at the bigger picture, this market share was achieved in just 3 days after general availability was officially announced.

And don’t forget that the free Windows 10 upgrade isn’t yet available for everyone, as Microsoft rolls it out in waves, so imagine that this rapid adoption is very likely to grow in the next couple of months.

Microsoft wants Windows 10 to be running on 1 billion devices by 2017, and if it indeed manages to upgrade Windows 7 and 8.1 computers to this new OS version, this goal could indeed be achieved. Until now, approximately 67 million PCs have already been upgraded to Windows 10, according to unofficial figures, and more are very likely to do the same thing as the operating system becomes available to new PCs across the world.
