Microsoft could soon rename the Windows Store in Windows 10 to “Microsoft Store,” as this designation would better reflect the addition of new content and categories available for users.

Although Microsoft is yet to announce the change, a new report today reveals that the company has already renamed the Windows Store to Microsoft Store in documentation aimed at business customers and in the education market, with consumers likely to follow at a later time.

“Welcome to the Microsoft Store for Business and Education! You can use Microsoft Store to find, acquire, distribute, and manage apps for your organization or school. You can also work with developers to create line-of-business apps that are only available to your organization. IT admins can sign up for the Microsoft Store for Business and Education, and get started working with apps,” one of the documentation pages reads.

A change that simply makes sense

Having the Windows Store renamed to Microsoft Store makes sense on Windows 10, especially because the software giant is adding more content and product categories that aren’t necessarily related to Windows.

For example, although the Windows Store was at first supposed to provide quick access to apps and games, it has since expanded to include music, movies, themes, and browser extensions, with Microsoft more recently announcing that it’s bringing the full version of the Office productivity suite in the Store as well.

At the same time, Microsoft has also been spotted testing Office 365 subscriptions sold through the Store, so changing it opens the door to a bigger expansion that could at some point include even more products that can be purchased by users.

The renaming is not yet official, but if the Windows Store is indeed getting a new name, expect it to happen in the Redstone 3 update for Windows 10 due to launch in September. Insiders should obviously see the change a bit sooner in preview builds if this is indeed the plan.
