Users again reporting problems with Start menu and Cortana

One of the biggest problems with Windows 10 after users completed the upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.1 was the Start menu failing to work completely, with an error showing up on the screen and providing a message that said only very little about what happened.

“Critical error. Your Start menu isn’t work. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in.” Unsurprisingly, the majority of users getting this error signed out and back in to repair the problem, but in the end, Microsoft’s recommendation made no difference.

And now it turns out that, after the November Update, some of the users who upgraded are experiencing the Start menu issue once again, with plenty of posts on Microsoft’s Community forums confirming that the software giant is yet to address the problem.

Whatever the cause of the bug actually is, it’s pretty clear that the November Update reset users’ settings, so this is why the Start menu critical error is back again. In most of the cases, users who cannot launch the Start menu are also unable to access Cortana and other apps, such as the store.

How to (try to) fix it

Believe it or not, but one of the possible causes for your Start menu issues could be the Dropbox app. If Dropbox is installed on your computer, remove it, reboot the computer, and try to see if the Start menu or Cortana is working correctly.

Several users have already confirmed that the Dropbox app was at fault for all these problems, but there are also Windows 10 adopters who've said that removing it made no difference and the Start menu still failed to work correctly.

In these cases, creating a new user account and migrating all your data to it could be the only way to solve the problem, but this clearly takes time and involves more advanced computer skills.

Obviously, everyone expects Microsoft to get this feature right and address the glitch once and for all, but the company is yet to publicly acknowledge it and confirm work on a fix.
