Windows Timeline likely to launch in Redstone 4

Windows Sets is one of the most exciting new features announced by Microsoft and coming in a future update, as it enables tabs nearly everywhere across the OS, but as it turns out, we might have to wait a bit longer than expected to get it on our PCs.

The next big update for Windows 10 is Redstone 4 coming in the spring of 2018, and while this sounds like the perfect occasion for Microsoft to launch Sets, the feature might not be ready until the next-next update for the operating system.

As onMSFT notes, Microsoft’s Jason Howard said during a recent webcast that while Windows Timeline is likely to get the go-ahead for Redstone 4, not the same thing can be said about Sets, which needs more time to reach the final stage of development.

It’ll take a while”

While there’s a good chance Sets makes its way to Windows 10 PCs as part of the Windows Insider program, it might not be part of the stable build launching in the spring.

This is clearly bad news for Windows 10 users who were looking forward to having tabs in the OS, but it’s certainly not surprising, as Terry Myerson, EVP Windows and Devices Group, said in the original announcement that Sets wouldn’t launch overnight.

“With Sets specifically, we’ll introduce a controlled study into WIP so that we can more accurately assess what’s working and what’s not. That means a smaller percentage of you will initially get Sets in a build. It also means that some of you won’t get it at all for a while, as we compare the usage and satisfaction of task switching in Windows for people who have sets versus people who don’t. Eventually everyone will get Sets — but it could be awhile,” Myerson said (emphasis is ours).

A new Windows 10 build is expected to launch very soon, but for the time being, it’s not yet clear if this is the one that’ll bring the first preview version of Sets to insiders.
