Windows 10 RS2 Almost Ready As Microsoft Compiles First rs2_release Builds

Windows 10 Creators Update (internally codenamed Redstone 2) is projected to launch this spring, and sources familiar with the matter said Microsoft was planning to make the OS update feature-locked by the end of January to then switch focus to bug fixes and performance improvements.

And it turns out that this stage has indeed been reached, with Microsoft now compiling the first rs2_release builds that would be shipped to insiders for testing.

After shipping Windows 10 build 15025 to insiders enrolled in the Fast ring, and preparing for the bug bash that’s still under way, Microsoft also started compiling rs2_release builds that are said to contain nothing else than bug fixes and improvements based on the feedback received from users.

BuildFeed indicates that there are two different rs2_release builds compiled until now, namely 15025, which was spotted on January 27, and 15031, which is the more recent one that showed up on February 4. Both are only available internally and cannot be downloaded by insiders in the public rings.

Possible switch to rs2_release soon

Windows insiders are still in the rs2_prerelease branch, but Microsoft could make the switch to the release channel with the next build possibly coming this or the next week. Of course, given the bug bash, the next build will include tons of fixes and performance improvements.

Windows 10 Redstone 2 is expected to make its debut in April, so Microsoft switching the focus entirely to bug fixes and improvements at this point perfectly makes sense.

This means that no new features would be added beyond this point, so in case you were expecting for a specific option in Windows 10 Creators Update and it’s not there just yet, there’s a bigger chance you’ll get it in the Redstone 3 update due this fall.

Windows 10 Creators Update will bring a long list of improvements, including new features for Microsoft Edge, security enhancements, as well as updates for the built-in apps that are offered with the operating system. The number of new features for mobile devices is smaller, though, but the company is shipping preview builds for smartphones as well.
