14 DAY TRIAL // In addition to the features that Microsoft has already implemented in Insider builds, Windows 10 Redstone 4 is projected to come with some extra goodies, including options to run multiple instances of UWP apps.
In developer documentation for Windows 10 Redstone 4 published earlier this month, Microsoft explains that UWP apps will indeed support multiple instances, which basically means that users will be able to run several windows of the same app at the same time on the screen.
“Prior to Windows 10, version 1803, only one instance of a UWP app could be running at a time. Now, a UWP app can opt-in to support multiple instances. If an instance of an multi-instance UWP app is running, and a subsequent activation request comes through, the platform will not activate the existing instance. Instead, it will create a new instance, running in a separate process,” Microsoft explains.
Windows 10 version 1803
Usually, when Microsoft introduces new features for UWP apps, the company pioneers their introduction by adding them to core Windows 10 apps, though at this point it’s not clear if this the case.
The software giant hasn’t released any such previews for Windows 10 apps as part of the Insider program, and it’ll be interesting to see if it wants third-party devs to be the first rolling out such features.
Windows 10 Redstone 4 is already in the final development stages, and the new OS release should be finalized sometime in March. The production ring will get it in April after insiders as version 1803 – the version number is a direct reference to RTM compiling date, with the first two digits representing the year and the other two the month when the build has been finalized.
Microsoft is yet to announce the official name of the Redstone 4 release, but it’s believed it could be called Windows 10 Spring Creators Update.
