14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is getting ready to introduce the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in less than a month, so the company is also preparing to deliver the first Redstone 2 builds to insiders in order to advance to the next development milestone for the operating system.
It’s not a surprise, though, that the software giant is planning in advance, so a report by WindowsCentral reveals that Microsoft is targeting the summer of next year as the release date for the third wave of Redstone.
The Anniversary Update is internally known as Redstone, and its development is split into multiple waves, the first of which will get the green light on August 2. The second Redstone update is expected to land in the spring next year while the third will thus debut in the summer, approximately one year after the first wave.
New Surface models coming shortly after that
While the launch of the third wave of Redstone seems to take place shortly after the second, this is part of Microsoft’s strategy to launch two major Windows 10 updates every year. This aligns with previous reports indicating that Redmond would no longer release new Windows versions, but significant updates for the core Windows OS.
There were reports that Microsoft wanted to align the release of Redstone 2 with the launch of new Surface models, but this no longer seems to be the case, as the company is now allegedly planning to introduce the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2 this year in the fall.
As a result, the next-next generation of Surface devices will see daylight in the fall of 2017, which means that the release of Redstone 3 won’t coincide with their debut.
Certainly, these plans could change at any minute now, given the fact that we’re talking about a product that could see daylight in about 12 months, but it’s very clear that 2017 is going to be an exciting year for Microsoft, partners, and users.
