Microsoft might announce the new name later today

Microsoft is expected to discuss more details regarding its new Windows 10 update in a press conference in approximately one hour, and a new report claims that the company could also reveal the official name of Redstone 2.

Redmond has already started work on Redstone 2 and preview builds have already shipped to insiders, but Microsoft has so far been tight-lipped on everything related to the launch date and the name of the update.

While Redstone 2 is the internal codename, it appears that the final version shipping to users might be called “Creators Update,” as Brad Sams spotted today in an official description published by Microsoft in the store.

Microsoft itself says in the description of MSPaint, an app published in the store, that it requires Windows 10 Creators Update (build 14800 or greater), hinting that this is indeed the name that the company could use for the upcoming release.

Aligning with previous reports

This also aligns with the hints that Microsoft has dropped lately about its October 26 event, with the focus put on creativity and artists.

“Imagine what you’ll do” is the tagline of today’s event, and Microsoft is expected to put creativity at the core of the conference, with the Surface PC unveiling to also adopt a similar approach.

As far as the release date is concerned, previous information hinted that Microsoft might be planning the final version of Redstone 2 to be version 1703, which according to the company’s naming strategy, could be a hint that the launch date is March 2017.

The existing Anniversary Update is version 1607 and it was ready in July 2016, while the previous version was 1511 for the November Update, also debuting in November. If the same approach is maintained, there’s a good chance we’ll get the Creators Update, supposing this is the final name for the update, in March, and this aligns with previous reports that the Redstone 2 would land in the spring.

UPDATE: Microsoft has just confirmed at the event that the next update would be called Windows 10 Creators Update and would launch in the spring.
