Windows 10 was launched on July 29 and after one day, Microsoft also bragged about how many users installed it on their PCs, revealing that more than 14 million computers downloaded the new operating system in the first 24 hours.

Since then, Microsoft has been hard at work to make Windows 10 available to as many computers as possible, as the company is rolling out the new operating system in waves, as it manages to fix compatibility issues with a number of apps and hardware parts, thus trying to make sure that everything runs smoothly for everyone.

And according to new data provided by StatCounter, Windows 10 has already reached a record market share on August 16, as it was spotted running on no less than 6.55 percent of the total PCs across the world.

These figures are impressive to say the least and what's even more important is that this is almost the double of Windows 8's market share, which during the same day dropped to 3.61 percent.

Windows 7 also going down

Since Windows 10 is offered as a free upgrade to users running genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 on their PCs, it's only natural to expect these two OS versions to lose some users.

That's exactly what's happening right now, as Windows 7 has recorded a significant decline in the last few days, but it continues to be the number one desktop operating system with a share about 50 percent. A total of 50.84 percent of PCs worldwide were running Windows 7 on August 16, according to StatCounter data, while Windows 8.1 reached 15.47 percent.

These figures are expected to grow in the coming weeks and months, especially because Windows 10 will soon become available for many more users, but also thanks to the fact that some enterprises are still considering and planning the upgrade. Thousands of computers will be upgraded to Windows 10 at once in these organizations, so expect a massive growth very soon.
