Windows 10 started 2016 in style and managed to set a new record, as its adoption continued to improve in the first month of the year.

Launched in July 2015 with much fanfare, Windows 10 has slowly and surely improved its market share before reaching this new record, with analysts expecting the new operating system to continue growing throughout the year as more enterprises complete the transition.

Data provided by StatCounter indicates that, in January 2016, Windows 10 was running on 13.57 percent of the desktop computers across the world, which is basically enough to become the second most-used desktop operating system at the moment.

Getting closer to Windows 7

There are two different sets of good news for Windows 10.

First and foremost, it managed to overtake Windows 8.1, which is now on the third place with 11.66 percent, but also Mac OS X, which lost ground quite rapidly to drop to the fourth position with 9.03 percent.

Second, Windows 10 is getting very close to leader Windows 7, currently at 46.76 percent but losing ground very fast in certain markets.

In Europe, for instance, Windows 10 is already at 17.77 percent while Windows 7 dropped to 42.68 percent, so Microsoft’s new operating system is rapidly approaching the leader. In the United States alone, Windows 7 decline even more, to 40.63 percent, while Windows 10 and Mac OS X are still fighting for the runner-up seat with 15.57 percent and 15.16 percent, respectively.

While these figures could change a little bit in the coming weeks, there’s no doubt that Windows 10 is growing, and if the same trend is maintained, Windows 7 could actually lose its leader position by the end of the year.

Certainly, the fight will be hard, especially because there are plenty of Windows 7 users who don’t want to upgrade to Windows 10, but with Microsoft becoming so aggressive, the new OS has big chances to improve significantly with every new month.
