Fan art imagines Project Neon version of Skype

Microsoft’s new design language for Windows 10 is called Project Neon and is expected to make its way to production builds later this year, probably with the Redstone 3 update due in the fall.

But in the meantime, the existing Project Neon information is being used as source of inspiration for a wide variety of concepts, some of which indeed look so good that they’d deserve to be part of Windows 10.

This is the case of this Skype concept that you can see in this article and which was published on reddit by user MaelNS. The concept uses the blurred background that Project Neon is supposed to bring, along with big fonts and a pretty modern look that at first glance really seems to perfectly combine functionality with an eye-candy interface.

While in terms of user experience the new UI shouldn’t affect too much since it’s based on the store version of Skype, there are a few refinements that are still needed, such as the left bar that needs to be smaller to have the same dimensions as the Start button when collapsed.

Dark and light themes

But other than that, the concept certainly looks good, and the creator imagined both dark and light themes, which are expected to be released for the majority of Windows 10 apps, as per Microsoft’s approach in the operating system.

“I've not removed all the curves (corners, buttons, bubbles) because imo it's a good evolution for the design of Windows: it's a tool for designer, helping for example to give more visual hint to undersand the inside/outside metaphore (for windows, bubbles, etc.). Imho, the visual language from MS should earn its identity mainly from the use of large spacing, and big & bold fonts for title,” the concept designer says.

It goes without saying that while this concept looks pretty good, we shouldn’t expect it to make its way to Windows 10, although there’s no doubt that Microsoft’s own designers would do themselves a favor should they decide to check out this fan art.
