Windows 10 Mobile might be coming later than anticipated

This week marked an important milestone for Microsoft: the Redmond giant is finally rolling out its new Windows 10 operating system. And a select number of users have already received a free upgrade to Windows 10.

But what about Windows 10 Mobile, the revamped iteration of Windows Phone which will soon be powering the next-gen mobile phones based on Windows? Well, we’re still a few months away from seeing this platform launch, but how much exactly do we have to wait?

Until now, officials at Microsoft have kept mum on a possible release date for Windows 10 Mobile. But this week, an executive with Microsoft South Africa talking to iAfrica might have just spilled the beans concerning this matter.

During the interview, Windows and Surface Business Group Leader at Microsoft SA Anthony Doherty has cautiously pointed (big highlight on the word “cautiously”) towards a November timeframe for the release of Windows 10 Mobile.

Windows 10 Mobile might be a little late

He was obviously referring to the local market in Africa, so maybe the release of Windows 10 Mobile will happen at a later date in the USA.

On top of hinting towards a possible release date for Windows 10 Mobile, Doherty has also revealed that Microsoft’s intelligent assistant Cortana will not be available in the region for the time being.

He also dropped a few hints related to Continuum on the future Windows Phone platform, indicating that the system might need the services of a dongle to work.

“That [Continuum for phones] has a…let’s call it a box for the moment that you can connect your phone into. That will be available with the premium devices that will be sold - with and without. So you’ll be able to buy it as a standalone accessory but you’ll also be able to buy it as a bundle,” he said.

Previous rumors indicated a September/October launch date for Windows 10 Mobile, which would have coincided with Android M's release timeframe, but if Doherty’s testimony proves to be accurate, we might be looking at a slight delay.

Nonetheless, we shouldn’t forget that he was talking about the Windows 10 Mobile release in a specific market and not worldwide.
