Microsoft has just announced that Windows 10 Mobile Redstone build 14291 is now available for older Lumia devices too, but only if they are supported by the Windows Insider program.

Previously available only for handsets that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile, such as Lumia 550, 650, 950, and 950 XL, build 14291 is the newest version of the Redstone update that can be installed as part of the Windows Insider program.

Microsoft said that Redstone builds would be released to older Lumia phones after they receive the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, and given the fact that the rollout started last week, the company can now go forward with work on the upcoming OS update.

Lumia 635 is not supported

The only device not getting Windows 10 Mobile Redstone build 14291 is Lumia 635, but Microsoft says that, at some point in the future, it will be supported too.

“We will add the Lumia 635 at a later date,” Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has confirmed today when announcing that more phones can install build 14291.

“Going forward - these devices can receive new builds from our Development Branch that we release to the Fast and Slow rings. As we stated previously, only devices which are eligible to receive the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will be able to get preview builds from the Development Branch.”

Unfortunately, unsupported phones will no longer be allowed to install Redstone builds, but instead, they can continue receiving 10586.x builds, according to Aul. Devices such as Lumia 520 and 1020 are included on the list, which you can check in full in the box after the jump.

For the moment, there’s no word on whether new devices can be supported in the future, but by the looks of it, Microsoft seems very keen on continuing work on Windows 10 Mobile only with models that can truly ensure a flawless experience.
