“Localization for English” update shipped to some devices

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 build 15002 earlier this year for the PC insiders in the Fast ring, but Windows 10 Mobile has once again been left behind as more work on the phone version needs to be completed.

And while everyone’s waiting for build 15002 to ship to their devices, a number of users received an unexpected update that pushes Windows 10 Mobile build version to 14998, even though it doesn’t seem to bring anything new.

First and foremost, according to German site DrWindows, 14998 is not a full build, but only an update that shows up on select devices as “Localization for English.” There is no documentation available for the time being, and Microsoft itself hasn’t announced this update, so it’s hard to tell what exactly it brings new on phones enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

Update failing to install for some

Additionally, it appears that the update fails to install on a number of phones for no clear reason, but on the other hand, there were users who managed to get it installed on their devices. It’s not clear how it was possible, but at first glance, the biggest change it produces is pushing Windows 10 Mobile version to 14998.

With all the uncertainty, does this mean that someone pushed the publish button too soon? Maybe, but it’s still unexpected to see devices updated to build 14998 using a package called “Localization for English,” and not a full build or cumulative update.

Microsoft continues to remain completely tight-lipped on anything Windows 10 Mobile for the time being, but if everything goes according to plan, a new build for smartphones should be shipped anytime soon.

In the meantime, if you do get the very same update on your smartphone, although chances are for this to happen are super-small right now, and it fails to install, don’t worry because the same thing was experienced by other users as well. So just wait for the next public build and everything should be fine.
