The final OS is projected to launch in the coming weeks

Microsoft has recently revealed that Windows 10 was running on 200 million devices across the world, explaining that adoption of the new operating system goes much better than it did in the case of Windows 7 or 8.

But it's very important to note that this 200 million figure concerns devices, and not PCs, as Microsoft is also offering Windows 10 for Xbox One consoles and smartphones.

Citing sources close to the matter, Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley has said in a recent podcast that, out of these 200 million devices running Windows 10, no less than 180 million are PCs. And it's no surprise here. Windows 10 was launched on PCs more than 5 months ago and it is offered as a free upgrade to those running Windows 7 or 8.1.

The smartphone push

In addition to the 180 million PCs, the same source claims that there are already 18 million Xbox One consoles running Windows 10, which proves that adoption of the OS in this particular sector is going well too.

As far as smartphones are concerned, it appears that Microsoft registered 1 million handsets running Windows 10 Mobile, which is kind of impressive, given the fact that the OS isn't yet broadly available. Windows 10 Mobile is currently pre-installed on new Lumia phones, such as 950, 950 XL, and 550, and offered as part of the Windows Insider program to registered testers.

Word has it that Microsoft plans to release Windows 10 Mobile in the coming weeks, and the recently launched build 10586.63 is believed to be the upgrade version that will be shipped to Windows Phone devices. This build is currently being tested by fast ring users, and in case no major bug is found, the company could decide to release it for slow ring insiders and then for everyone else later this month.
