Microsoft is prepping a new Windows 10 Mobile preview

The latest Windows 10 Mobile build Microsoft delivered to Windows Insiders dates from about four weeks ago, so given the company’s promise to launch technical previews more often, everyone was expecting to see a new release pretty soon.

A serious candidate for a new preview was thought to be version 10240, which, according to Microsoft’s own Joe Belfiore, has been pushed to Xiaomi Mi4 devices for internal use.

He claims that the build has been in testing for about a week and it seemed to be stable enough to be worth releasing as the next Windows 10 Mobile technical preview.

Microsoft’s Belfiore also said that the same build 10240 was running on the Continuum sample devices as well, and once again, he suggested that it was a strong candidate to be released in the not so distant future.

Insiders won't be getting build 10240 after all

However, it appears that the plans to have Windows 10 Mobile Build 10240 released as the next preview build to Windows Insiders have been scrapped off.

As Gabe Aul reveals this week on Twitter, Build 10240 has apparently been plagued by a blocking bug, so Microsoft has been forced to remove this version from the queue and start working on a new build altogether. The new iteration will contain a fix for the above-mentioned blocking bug.

A blocking bug means that there’s a serious enough problem with the build, which prevents Microsoft from pushing it to Insiders. Risky builds are posted all the time to the Fast Track, so there must be something seriously wrong with 10240.

So when exactly can we expect to see a new technical preview? According to Aul, it shouldn’t take more than a few days. Apparently, they are in the process of moving to a new branch for Mobile, newer than 10240.

If Microsoft manages to fix the blocking bug quickly, Insiders might get to see a new build as soon as next week. If the problem takes longer to repair, we might be looking at a longer wait, which is hopefully not the case.
