Microsoft expected to reveal updated figures very soon

Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 adoption figures revealed that its new operating system was installed on 110 million PCs in October, but these numbers have obviously improved since then, as more people have upgraded their computers.

But thanks to new market share figures provided by Net Applications, we can have a closer look at how Windows 10 adoption has evolved lately as we wait for official statistics offered by Microsoft itself.

Net Applications says that Windows 10 was powering 10.9 percent of the desktop PCs in December 2015, and given the fact that there are currently 1.5 billion Windows computers out there, this means the new operating system was running on nearly 164 million of them. As CW writes, the 1.5 billion figure is being used by Microsoft during most of its events, but it might not be entirely accurate, as it could easily change from one month to another.

The 1 billion devices goal

Unofficial statistics that have reached the web lately through unconfirmed sources have indicated that Windows 10 reached the 200 million devices threshold, which means that the estimate made above could be really accurate. It’s worth noting that the 200 million installs concern devices (which include PCs, tablets, and smartphones) whereas the 164 million estimation only refers to PCs.

Windows 10 was released on July 29, 2015, and Microsoft is offering it as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 computers until July 29 this year. The company hopes to bring its new operating system on 1 billion devices by the end of 2016, so approximately 20 percent of its goal has already been reached in the first 5 months on the market.

The other remaining 12 months, however, should bring us a much faster adoption rate to see Microsoft achieving its goal, and the company says that this is very likely to happen, given the fact that, this year, enterprises are also expected to start the migration while Windows 10 Mobile will officially see daylight too.
