Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update) as the company continues to work on resolving bugs and improving the general performance of the OS.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4480976 increases the OS build number to 17134.556, and it comes with a plethora of bug fixes, all of which are embedded in the box after the jump.

However, worth noting is a fix for the bug introduced by the January 2019 Patch Tuesday updates and which caused some third-party applications to no longer authenticate hotspots.

There is also a fix for a black screen issue that appeared when a Thunderbolt storage device was attached, and Microsoft says it repaired the problem that prevented links for some compressed file formats from resolving.

Cumulative update KB4480976 also repairs a bug that caused high CPU usage due to the Windows Driver Frameworks service.

Three known issues

There are three known issues in this cumulative update, and all of them are inherited from the previous releases, and they include a bug that blocks users from pinning a web link on the Start menu or the taskbar. The update also breaks down Microsoft Access files, and you can fix them as detailed here.

“Applications that use a Microsoft Jet database with the Microsoft Access 97 file format may fail to open if the database has column names greater than 32 characters. The database will fail to open with the error, ‘Unrecognized Database Format,’” Microsoft explains.

You can get this cumulative update right now from Windows Update, but IT admins can also download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog website. There are no reports of failed installs, and the number of such issues experienced in the last few months was drastically reduced, so this is an indication that Microsoft has more or less improved update reliability overall.
