Registry hack appears to fix the bug for Windows 10 users

More reports of issues with Windows 10 cumulative update KB4093112 are coming in, and most recently, users have started complaining of problems with Wacom pens after installing this new patch.

As we reported already, KB4093112 appears to fail to install on a number of systems, but this is no surprise, as Windows 10 cumulative updated have hit such issues for quite some time now.

But a new bug now appears to plague Wacom pens, which suffer from broken down pressure sensitivity, leading to incorrect input on touch displays. Woody Leonhard says KB4093112 could be to blame, while a report from Barb Bowman indicates March Windows 10 cumulative update KB4089848 for Fall Creators Update as the culprit.

Uninstalling the cumulative update appears to resolve the problem, but for those who don’t want to do this because it basically means removing security patches as well, there’s a registry hack that also fixes the bug.

How to fix the bug

What you need to do is navigate to the following patch in the Windows Registry and change the value of the PenInteractionModel entry to 1:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PenLegacy\PenInteractionModel\ Once you reboot the system, the default Wacom pen behavior should be restored, removing the bug until a fix from Microsoft is shipped. When this patch arrives, you can return to the registry setting to the default value.

Microsoft hasn’t yet acknowledged such bugs, and the official KB page of KB4093112 indicates there’s just one known issue with Windows Update History incorrectly listing the update as failed to install. If you want to check if KB4093112 installed correctly on your system, press the Win key + R and type winver. The Windows version with cumulative update KB4093112 installed should be 16299.371.

We’ll continue to monitor these reports and see if other workarounds are discovered, but for the time being, the solution posted above seems to be the only one that does the trick.
