New cumulative update, same old problems

Microsoft rolled out a new cumulative update yesterday for systems running Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607), but just like it happened so many times in the past, it appears that this one is failing to install as well.

KB3201845 landed as a big surprise given the fact that we’re only a few days away from Patch Tuesday, but Windows 10 users are recommended to install it anyway, especially because there are several fixes and improvements included this time.

But it turns out that not everyone can install this new cumulative update, mostly because KB3201845 seems to be affected by the same issues as its predecessors.

Failed installs

Posts online show that KB3201845 fails to install with the same error message that says virtually nothing and, for the moment, no official fix seems to be available. Users on Microsoft’s Community forums and on reddit are complaining that KB3201845 reaches 99 percent, fails to install, then rolls back to the previous configuration before the system is brought back to the desktop.

The cumulative update is afterward offered once again before failing one more time, so these systems might be pushed into an infinite update loop.

It appears that KB3201845 doesn’t fix the 3.99TB bug in system cleanup, which was caused by one previous cumulative update for Windows 10.

One of the users who posted on the Community forums provides a detailed description of how the update fails to install on his computer:

This update has tried to install twice including a retry by me. The download hangs at 0%. The following is what is showing on the update status:

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: • Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3201845) - Error 0x80070002

Some of our readers also confirmed problems with this update, and one of them claimed that this update corrupted his partitions.

At this moment, there is no workaround to get the cumulative update running, but manually downloading KB3201845 could help. It’s also not known how widespread this problem currently is, and we’ve reached out to Microsoft to get more information on these problems.
