This CU is only aimed at insiders for the time being

Microsoft released Windows 10 cumulative update KB3194496 to Release Preview insiders a couple of days ago, but it looks like some of them are experiencing issues when trying to install it.

At this point, it’s not yet clear how widespread this new bug actually is, but users are reporting pretty much the same problems as with other cumulative updates that were shipped to PCs that were not enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

According to posts online, the update fails to install on Windows 10 insider preview builds with the usual error “We cannot install the update. Undoing changes.”

“I have three machines, and this update has failed on each of them multiple times. It goes so far, then says ‘we cannot install update’ and reverses itself. Am good at following directions, however cannot find any definitive advice on this one,” one user explained on Microsoft’s forums.

Broken cumulative updates

There are no workarounds for the time being, but we’re hearing that Microsoft is already investigating these reports, so before the cumulative updates are released to everyone, a fix should become available.

This is actually the purpose of the Insider program and it’s definitely a good thing that Microsoft has started shipping cumulative updates to computers running preview builds too, as the firm can thus test them and address any issues that might arise before they reach public PCs.

On the other hand, it’s very clear that delivering flawless cumulative updates is still a challenge for Microsoft, as many of the releases that took place in the last few months caused issues on a number of computers. In most of the cases, these CUs fail to install, but there were also reports of bugs that were experienced after the successful deployment of cumulative updates.

The next public release of a cumulative update should take place on October 11, when Microsoft will ship all the other Patch Tuesday fixes to Windows computers.
