Downloading gets stuck at 95%, users complain

Microsoft rolled out a new batch of cumulative updates for Windows 10 a few hours ago, and although it all seems to work flawlessly this time, there’s an installation problem with at least one of the patches.

Some of the Windows 10 users who attempted to download and install cumulative update KB3189866 are reporting that the process gets stuck at various moments before completion, with the most common reports pointing to freezes happening either at 45 percent or 95 percent.

It goes without saying that if the update can’t be fully downloaded, users are not allowed to install the cumulative update and rebooting the system doesn’t seem to make any difference for the time being.

Microsoft is yet to publicly acknowledge the issue with the cumulative update, but some of the users who experienced it revealed in comments posted online that they’ve already tried clearing the update cache with no result.

Workarounds not making any difference

You can also try restarting Windows Update and the other related services and to do this, you can simply launch a Command Prompt window with administrator privileges - right click the Start menu and hit Command Prompt (Admin) - and then type the following commands one by one:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc
It’s not yet clear how many computers are impacted by this issue, but judging from the number of reports, there are plenty of users experiencing problems with KB3189866, so if you haven’t installed it just yet, it might be a better idea to simply wait to see if Microsoft comes up with a fix.

On the other hand, there are also users who claim that all updates installed fine on their PCs, and we’re among them, as we had no issue with KB3189866 on computers here at Softpedia. It remains to be seen if this is widespread or not, but it goes without saying that users who plan on installing it should be extra cautious.

UPDATE: Here's a very simple way to fix Windows 10 cumulative update KB3189866 getting stuck at 95 percent.
