This new version is specifically aimed at TH2 users

Microsoft recently rolled out a new cumulative update for Windows 10, this time specifically aimed at Threshold 2 users and not at those running the 10240 RTM build released in July.

KB3120677 is now available for download via Windows Update, and all users are highly recommended to get it as soon as possible, as it addresses issues that affect privacy settings and which forced Microsoft to pull Windows 10 Threshold 2 ISOs during the weekend.

This is one of the rare occasions when Microsoft actually provides release notes for its cumulative update, but this time the company had no other choice given the fact that the bug it found reset the privacy settings users previously made in RTM.

According to the official changelog posted on the KB page, this new cumulative update “improves the functionality of Windows 10 version 1511,” but in a different Knowledge Base article the company explains exactly what is being changed with this update.

Privacy settings

As we’ve told you earlier, users who installed Windows 10 TH2 from an ISO might have their privacy settings reset, and that’s what the company has tried to fix with this update.

“When the November update was installed, a few settings preferences may have inadvertently not been retained for advertising ID, Background apps, SmartScreen Filter, and Sync with devices. This issue has been fixed in the update that accompanies KB3120677,” the company explains.

As a result, today’s update should fix the bug, and Microsoft says that it’s also hard at work to release a patch that would help restore previous settings. The update “will arrive over the coming days and we apologize for the inconvenience,” the company adds.

At the same time, Redmond also provided some guidelines for those who want to check whether their settings have been impacted by the bug:

“In the meantime, users interested in checking their settings can find them by going to Settings, then Privacy. Select General to adjust the advertising ID and SmartScreen Filter. Select Other devices to adjust your Sync with devices settings. Select Background apps to review the applications set to run in the background."
