The newest cumulative update can’t be installed by some

KB3081455 is the latest cumulative update for Windows 10 and was released earlier this month on Patch Tuesday, as in addition to performance improvements and other optimizations, it also includes security fixes that were released to PCs running older Windows versions.

But just like its predecessors, KB3081455 fails to install on a number of PCs, with most users reporting error 0x80070002 when trying to get it deployed on their computers.

For the moment, Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue despite the increasing number of complaints pointing to such issues, so expect the next cumulative update to include fixes in this regard too.

Here’s how one of the users who attempted and failed to install KB3081455 describes the problem:

“I have problems installing new update for Windows 10. I have Windows 10 Home x64 and always I try install latest update KB3081455 it's fails to install. In event viewer I see error code 0x80070002. Already tried Windows Update troubleshooting but this isn't help.

“Microsoft, please bring back option for notify only when new updates is available! This is not serious that Windows tries install this update always after restart despite the fact that it was failed before. With Windows 8.1 I always installed updates after some days after it release so I avoid such problems.”

How to fix installation issues

A fix does exist, fortunately, but for the moment, we cannot confirm that it’s working for everyone. As we reported to you 10 days ago, running /sfc scannow in a command prompt window with administrator privileges helps install the update, as it repairs corrupt files on your hard drive.

The worst thing about all these installation issues is that KB3081455 is the not the only cumulative update that doesn’t deploy correctly and all its predecessors also caused similar problems.

Cumulative updates include all the previously-released fixes and patches, so computers that aren’t up to date have no other option than to install these to make sure they are completely protected against security bugs and that performance issues are no longer there. But with all these problems, getting cumulative updates is becoming a big painful release for many Windows 10 adopters.
