Remove it to install the Creators Update, Microsoft says

One of the common problems with big OS updates, as is the case of the Windows 10 Creators Update, is that the install process often experiences issues because of app compatibility errors, mostly because developers do not update their own software programs for Microsoft’s new releases.

Although the Creators Update installs fine for the majority of users, it appears that there’s an app blocking the new OS version from being deployed, and removing it completely appears to be the only workaround.

Microsoft has confirmed that the Toshiba Display Utility blocks the Creators Update from installing, and users whose computers are running it need to uninstall it before launching the update process.

“The Toshiba Display Utility is currently not supported on Windows 10 Creators Update.  If you have this app installed on your device, you will not receive the update and will be prevented from installing the Creators Update,” the company said.

“To install the Creators Update from the software download site, please uninstall the Toshiba Display Utility,” it continued, as no other workaround is available.

No word on planned fix just yet

The Toshiba Display Utility is an application developed by Toshiba for its own devices that makes it possible for users to adjust display settings, such as resolution and text size, while also offering some extra options like customizing the mouse pointer speed.

It goes without saying that this is a key app on Toshiba devices, but since it’s not compatible with the Creators Update, the only way to update is to remove it. Re-installing it after the update to the Creators Update is complete could work, but since it does suffer from compatibility issues, its performance could be limited as well.

Toshiba hasn’t yet provided a statement on what went wrong with its display utility and whether an update is planned, but we’re pretty sure the company is already aware of the problem and an update should be released anytime soon for its customers.
