Windows 10 continues its growth, and according to new stats provided by Valve for its gaming platform Steam, Microsoft’s new operating system is very close to becoming the number one choice for its users.

Right now, Windows 7 continues to be the top pick for users who play games on Steam. However, slowly and surely, more and more gamers make the move to Windows 10 thanks to the improvements that the operating system comes with, but also to DirectX 12, which for the moment remains a feature exclusively available in this version.

Last month, 34.81 percent of the Steam gamers were running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 on their computers, stats reveal, while 31.25 percent of them were already using Windows 10 64-bit.

Windows 8.1 64-bit is third in the charts, but far behind, with 15.09 percent.

Windows 10 goes up, Windows 7 goes down

What’s interesting, however, is that Windows 10 is the only Windows version that posted an increase last month (along with Windows XP, which actually managed to improve its Steam share by 0.01 percent - now at 2.17 percent). But while Windows 10 improved its share by 2.44 percent, Windows 7 64-bit dropped by 0.82 percent, so a switch of places could happen very soon.

Overall, Windows continues to be the dominant platform on Steam, despite the increasing number of games arriving on Linux as well, with 95.39 percent of the PCs running the app being powered by Microsoft’s operating system. Mac OS X is currently at 3.56 percent, down 0.08 percent, while Linux is running on only 0.96 percent of the machines, a drop of 0.02 percent.

Certainly, if the same growth rate is maintained, Windows 10 has all the chances to overtake Windows 7 next month and become the number one desktop operating system on Steam, which can only be good news for Microsoft, as the company keeps pushing people to start using it on all fronts.
