Microsoft adds features to install Windows 10 more easily

Microsoft is quietly adding more and more refinements to Windows 10 ahead of the big launch on July 29, and one of them concerns the way you install the operating system on devices with limited storage.

As reported by WinBeta, if you start the Windows 10 upgrade on a computer that doesn't have enough space to complete the install, the operating system provides you with some new options that would help successfully deploy it without having to remove any of your files.

First of all, Microsoft tells you that “Windows needs more space,” and also displays the amount of space that's needed to complete the install.

“To make more space available for the upgrade, remove any files and apps that you no longer need or try one of these options: use Disk Cleanup to free up space or choose another drive or attach an external drive with available space.”

Windows 10 storage requirements

According to the official Windows 10 system requirements published by Microsoft on its website, the new operating system needs 16 GB of storage space for the 32-bit version and 20 GB for the 64-bit flavor.

Other requirements include a 1 GHz processor or faster, at least 1 GB of RAM for the 32-bit version, and 2 GB for 64-bit, a display with a resolution of at least 800x600 pixels, and DirectX 9-compatible graphics card.

Windows 10 has the exact same requirements as Windows 8.1, as Microsoft struggled to make it work on all devices running its predecessor, so if your computer is powerful enough to run Windows 8.1, you should be able to upgrade without any problem.

The same for Windows 7, as all users running this version of Windows 8.1 will be offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 during the first 12 months after launch, so providing flawless experience to all upgraders is vital for the success of the new OS.
