Microsoft has rolled out Windows 10 build 15031 to insiders enrolled in the Fast ring, taking one big step towards the completion of the Creators Update due in April.

With this new build, Microsoft is introducing a new feature called Compact Overlay window, which is essentially picture-in-picture support that makes it possible for you to continue watching a movie, for example, while working on a document, without actually closing any application.

Microsoft says that apps need to be updated to support this new feature and explains that Movies & TV and Skype Preview app will get such functionality “in the near future.”

Additionally, this build comes with Dynamic Lock, a new option that can automatically lock the operating system when the PC is not around a configured Bluetooth device. In other words, you can pair your PC with your mobile phone, and whenever you leave the desk, Windows 10 can automatically get locked. This feature can be enabled in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.

Bug fixes and known issues

There is also a new Share icon available in the operating system, plus Windows Game Bar improvements, with support for 52 additional games, including Football Manager 2017, Mass Effect 3, and Grand Theft Auto V.

Other than that, it’s all about bug fixes and performance improvements, and there are plenty of them, and you can check them out in the box after the article.

What’s also important to know is that there are also several known issues, and you should have them in mind when installing this build, especially because in some cases they could prevent you from downloading the new bits.

Just like it happened with the previous builds, the “Initializing” message might be displayed when attempting to download Windows 10 build 15031, and Microsoft says that you should wait because the download advances in the background and everything should complete just fine.

Windows 10 Mobile users aren’t getting this new build, but Microsoft says that it’s working on it and a new release could be announced sometime later this week, obviously depending on how internal testing goes.
