It could be possible, software developer says

With Windows phones no longer having a place in Microsoft’s vision, the loyal userbase that has tried to keep Windows 10 Mobile alive for so long is now looking into alternatives, and one possible way to go could be installing the full Windows 10 version of Lumia phones.

The debut of Windows 10 on ARM opened new doors to skilled developers who were exploring such a possibility, and as it turns out, doing it is not exactly impossible, though it obviously requires a ton of work.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been reporting about a project started by software engineer known on Twitter as @imbushuo, who tried to and managed to install Windows RT on a Lumia 640 XL. Of course, with Windows RT itself a flop, this was just an experiment with no real benefit to the other users, so the focus could soon be switched to installing Windows 10 ARM on Lumia phones.

Windows 10 ARM on Lumia phones “possible”

In a tweet last week (via WL), the developer explained that installing Windows 10 ARM on a Lumia 950 XL is “possible,” though he admitted that it’s “hell difficult” to do it. Is this going to happen? It depends on a lot of factors, but the good news for those who are hoping to keep their Windows phones around for a little longer is that @imbushuo says he’s looking into this already.

Windows 10 on ARM could breathe new life into Windows phones, though once again, getting full functionality on a Lumia is likely to be an impossible thing to do. Microsoft itself could help, but this is very unlikely to happen, as the company is believed to be working on its very own mobile project that could bring Windows 10 ARM on a device called Andromeda.

In this case, however, the device is expected to be a tablet with foldable screens and possibly multiple form factors, as we’ve seen in a lot of patents, but everything is still in the rumor stage with not a single word spoken by Microsoft.
