Microsoft is projected to launch the Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer, but the company hasn’t provided any other specifics regarding the release date.

And yet, everyone expects the company to take the wraps off the Anniversary Update (also known as the Redstone Update among Microsoft watchers and company employees) in July for two main reasons. Thus, this is the month when Windows 10 turns 1 and the company ends the free upgrade promo, and at the same time, Redmond itself has dropped several hints that this is when it’s likely to happen.

Rumor has it that the final build, often referred to as RTM, could be 1607, and although the company hasn’t yet confirmed this, there are several references in official documents that seem to confirm this is indeed the case.

For example, information regarding the company’s “Set up School PCs” app, which eases the transition of the educational sector to Windows 10, also contains a reference to build 1607, hinting that this is indeed the final version of the Anniversary Update.

Why it makes sense for 1607 to be RTM

There are several reasons Windows 10 build 1607 could be the final version of the Anniversary Update. First of all, this is an unreleased build, and it’s not the first time when it’s referenced in Microsoft documents, so the chances are that the company has prepared such documentation because this is the final Anniversary Update build.

Then, the 1607 numbering could be an indication of the release date. Back in late 2015, when Microsoft introduced the November Update, it labeled the build as 1511, using a numbering system that represents the release date: 15 is the year and 11 is the month, hence it’s November 2015.

In the case of 1607, this could mean that Windows 10 Anniversary Update launches in July 2016, although the exact day is not yet confirmed.

As usual, Microsoft isn’t willing to comment on these findings, so take everything with a pinch of salt, but there are big chances that 1607 is indeed the final build.
