The price tag: an unjustified $5.99 (€5.47) a bottle

For reasons still unknown, a Whole Foods supermarket in Los Angeles, California, thought it a good idea to try and sell people asparagus water.

The uncanny refreshment ended up grabbing headlines when, this past Monday, Los Angeles local Marielle Wakim snapped a photo of a few bottles neatly arranged on a shelf and shared it on Instagram.

“Somewhere in LA, Whole Foods executives are laughing at all of us,” Marielle Wakim captured her soon-to-go-viral photo of the asparagus water bottles.

What's asparagus water anyway?

If you're expecting a mind-boggling recipe complete with a full description of a rather lengthy technique to extract water from asparagus and create the first of its kind asparagus product, don't.

The asparagus water Whole Foods tried to sell people in LA was, well, three sticks of asparagus dipped in water. The price tag: $5.99 (€5.47) a bottle.

So, basically, nothing veggie lovers who like to stay hydrated on hot summer days couldn't cook in the comfort of their own home instead of paying money for. Mind you, it takes more skill to make tea.

The product didn't last long on shelves

Whole Foods' asparagus water didn't last long on shelves, and not because armies of seriously thirsty people bought all the bottles they could get their hands on. Rather, the supermarket chain removed it on the grounds that it had been offered by mistake.

“It was carried briefly in just one of our stores in California and was meant to be water with the essence of vegetables and/or mushrooms, which is typically made over a long period of time soaking in water.”

“It was made incorrectly and has since been removed,” Liz Burkhart, the grocery chain's senior media relations specialist, told HuffPost in an interview.

Well then, guess we'll just have to wait for the right kind of asparagus water to hit shelves to quench our thirst. Meanwhile, we'll have to make do with plain water.
