WhatsApp Desktop now being tested in the Windows Store

A Windows desktop version of WhatsApp is already up for grabs for those who want to stay in touch with contacts without unlocking their phones, but it turns out that the parent company is working on something that comes a little bit handier to those already on Windows 10.

WhatsApp is currently testing a Windows Store version of its PC client that would be available to all Windows 10 users, but at first glance, it brings almost no change as compared to the existing app.

Even though you might be tempted to think otherwise, the Windows Store version of the WhatsApp Desktop would still work exclusively on PC and the feature lineup would be exactly the same as the one currently available to users.

The app is already available in the Windows Store, but only registered testers can get it right now, though the company is expected to release it to everyone in the coming weeks.

Most likely a web wrapper

The Win32 version of WhatsApp Desktop is pretty much a web wrapper, as it emulates the interface and the functionality that’s available within a browser at web.whatsapp.com. The Windows Store client will probably do the same thing, serving as a quick way to chat with contacts on a Windows 10 device.

So why launching a Windows Store version? you could ask. Although at first glance it’s pretty much useless, the Windows Store app makes it possible for users of Windows 10 S to connect to WhatsApp from their devices as well. Windows 10 S is a dedicated SKU of Windows 10 that’s limited to Windows Store apps, with no permission to install Win32 software.

At this point, no official announcement is available on when we should expect the Windows Store version of WhatsApp Desktop, but given that it’s expected to be more of a web wrapper, it shouldn’t take too long before the download links go live for everyone.
