WhatsApp is suffering some rare downtime

WhatsApp is having some issues and is being reported as "down" by users across the world.

WhatsApp is a service that has a pretty good uptime with very few problems, much like Facebook is nowadays. Right now, however, users from all over the world are reporting issues in sending messages to their friends.

Some users are also complaining about being unable to load conversations.

Downdetector users have flagged issues all across Europe, the United States, and South America. Reports surged over the past hour, it seems, so this is a rather fresh problem.

This may very well be a problem with WhatsApp's servers and it remains to be seen how quick they will fix things. Until then, however, Twitter is going crazy over this, with #WhatsApp already trending.

We'll update when we know more.

Update 2: People from all over the world are reporting downtime - Germany, Panama, Brazil, Ecuador, Italy, Estonia, Switzerland, Mexico, Bolivia, Romania, Argentina, the UK, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Dubai, Morocco, Spain, and pretty much all of the United States.

Update 3: WhatsApp admitted there was an issue with its service, said it was working on it, but refused to add any other details. There is still no ETA for when the problem will be resolved. In the meantime, users are turning to other messaging apps to pass the time.

Update 4: Despite the fact that most WhatsApp users can now use their apps like they normally do, there are still plenty of reports indicating troubles with the app on DownDetector.

WhatsApp has some 1.2 billion users right now and the number keeps climbing. Facebook acquired the company back in February 2014 for $19.3 billion, a massive deal for the company. It has only managed to grow since then and improve its services while maintaining a free business model. Nowadays, it offers end-to-end encryption, which has recently upset British authorities who were unable to retrieve messages that the London terrorist allegedly sent before the attack.
